What is Smart Planning?

Smart Planning is the automated trip optimization module of Luminar Works, built for dense, multi-visit operations. The optimizer builds efficient plans within the rules you set, and never breaks a hard constraint. It takes the work out of building trips — without taking the control out of your hands: your time shifts from building trips to reviewing them.

Smart Planning requires Luminar Core as the base platform, and layers on top of your existing setup without restructuring it. Current pricing is shown on the Subscription Management page, accessed from the main menu after login.

What Smart Planning includes

Smart Planning: optimization you control

Bring in your tasks, review what's included, and optimize when you're ready. Optimization runs when you choose to trigger it — it does not run continuously in the background.

Smart Planning: priority sequencing

Set task priority — High, Medium, or Low — and the optimizer weighs priority against distance and timing, so what matters most is handled without unravelling the rest of the trip.

Smart Planning: windows and availability, respected

Service windows, cut-offs, appointment times, and each resource's operating window — the optimizer plans around all of them automatically, working through combinations no one has time to check by hand.

Smart Planning: capacities as hard constraints

Each Asset's capacity is a hard constraint — the optimizer never builds a trip that exceeds it.

Smart Planning: objective tuned for your operation

Some operations need to minimise distance, others to minimise time. The optimizer pursues the right balance for your operation, sequencing every trip to cut travel and waiting.

Smart Planning: manual override retained

Smart Planning generates the trips — you decide what to do with them. Drag tasks to resequence, swap resources, or override decisions at any point after a plan is generated. The optimizer is a starting point, not a lock-in.

Smart Planning and other modules

Smart Planning can be subscribed to directly with Luminar Core alone — no other module is required. It also works with all other planning modules, and takes them fully into account when they are active:

• With Multi-day Planning, the optimizer plans across the multi-day horizon.
• With Size-Up, the optimizer plans within every capacity dimension.

All of this happens in the same optimization pass — modules compose inherently rather than requiring separate runs.

Smart Planning FAQs

Is Smart Planning included when I sign up?
If you qualify for the 30-day free trial — one Business Unit with 5 or fewer resources — you get access to all paid modules during the trial, Smart Planning included. If you start with more than 5 resources, the trial does not apply and your first payment is taken immediately on subscribing. When the trial ends, keep the modules you want by subscribing, or continue on Luminar Core — free, with no time limit, for up to 5 resources in your first Business Unit.

Do I keep my Luminar Core data when I activate Smart Planning?
Yes. Your resources, trips, and plan history stay exactly where they are. Activating Smart Planning adds the optimization engine on top of your existing setup — adding a module never restructures or replaces what you have already configured.

Can I remove Smart Planning later?
Yes, at any time. Your Luminar Core base and any other active modules keep working. Removing a module switches off its capabilities, but your data and settings are retained, and your configuration is restored if you resubscribe.

Can I still manually adjust trips after Smart Planning generates them?
Yes. Drag tasks to resequence, swap resources, or override decisions at any point. You are in control.

Does Smart Planning run automatically?
No. Optimization runs on demand, when you choose to trigger it.

Does Smart Planning replace my planner?
No. Smart Planning reduces the time spent manually building trips — it doesn't replace operational decision-making. Planners still handle exceptions, customer communication, and real-world judgment calls. Most teams find their planner becomes more effective with Smart Planning, not less needed.
