How the Luminar Works subscription model works
Luminar Works is modular. Every account starts on Luminar Core, the free base platform, and paid modules can be added on top as your needs grow. You pay only for the modules you use and the resources you plan with.
Subscriptions are structured per Business Unit. There are two dimensions to what you pay for in each Business Unit:
- Resources — your first Business Unit includes up to 5 resources free. On Luminar Core alone, resources beyond 5 are charged per resource. Resources in additional Business Units are charged per resource — the free allocation applies to your first Business Unit only.
- Modules — paid modules are subscribed to individually and layer on top of your existing setup. A paid module is charged per resource across all resources in the Business Unit. Adding a module never restructures or replaces what you have already configured.
Current pricing is shown on the Subscription Management page, accessed from the main menu after login.
Luminar Core: the free tier
Luminar Core is free and includes the core platform: resource, customer, and task management, manual trip planning on the Gantt, and publishing.
- Free for up to 5 resources in your first Business Unit.
- No time limit — Core is not a trial and does not expire.
- Paid modules can be added to a Core account at any time.
Which resources count towards your Luminar Works subscription
Not every Asset and Agent counts towards your resource licenses. What counts depends on the Business Type of the Business Unit:
- In a Time-Constrained Business Unit, Agents are the resources that count towards licenses.
- In a Capacity-Constrained Business Unit, Assets are the resources that count towards licenses.
The Business Type is set at Business Unit level. See the Architecture documentation for more on Business Types.
Luminar Works pricing: resources
Your first Business Unit includes 5 resources free; beyond 5, each additional resource is charged per resource. Resources in additional Business Units are charged per resource — the free allocation applies to your first Business Unit only.
This per-resource charge applies when the Business Unit is on Luminar Core alone. Once a paid module is active, module pricing applies across all resources in the Business Unit and this separate beyond-5 charge no longer applies — see Luminar Works pricing: modules below.
Current pricing is shown on the Subscription Management page, accessed from the main menu after login.
Luminar Works pricing: modules
The paid modules available at launch are priced per resource:
- Smart Planning
- Multi-day Planning
- Size-Up
A paid module is charged per resource, across all resources in the Business Unit — not only those beyond the free 5. When a Business Unit has a paid module active, the separate per-resource charge for resources beyond 5 (which applies on Luminar Core alone) no longer applies; you pay the module price on every resource instead.
For example, a Business Unit on Luminar Core with 8 resources pays for 3 resources — those beyond the free 5. If it activates Smart Planning, its monthly subscription becomes 8 × the Smart Planning per-resource price, with no separate charge for the additional resources.
Future modules may use different pricing models where per-resource pricing is not the natural fit — for example, usage-based pricing for communications, or per-user packages. Each module's pricing model is stated in its own documentation.
Current pricing is shown on the Subscription Management page, accessed from the main menu after login.
Luminar Works free trial
A 30-day free trial is available on sign-up, for one Business Unit with 5 or fewer resources. The trial includes access to all paid modules.
- If you qualify for the free trial, your first payment is taken when the trial ends.
- If you increase your number of resources beyond 5 during the trial, your first payment is taken at that point.
- If you do not qualify for the free trial, your first payment is taken immediately on subscribing.
If you joined Luminar Works through the Founding Fleet early-adopter program, different trial terms apply — see the Founding Fleet documentation.
Upgrading your Luminar Works subscription
You can add modules or increase your resource count at any time from the Subscription Management page.
If you upgrade part-way through a billing cycle, a pro-rata payment for the additional modules and/or resources is applied for the remainder of the current billing cycle.
Downgrading your Luminar Works subscription
You can remove modules or reduce your resource count from the Subscription Management page.
- Removing a module: the module's capabilities are switched off, but your data and settings are retained. If you resubscribe later, your previous configuration is restored.
- Reducing resources: reducing your licensed resource count reduces the licenses available for planning going forward. Historically created data is retained. Note that setting a resource to Inactive is a separate action and does not affect your subscription license count.
- Downgrading part-way through a billing cycle: you retain access to the modules and number of resources you have already paid for, for the remainder of the current billing cycle.
- Downgrading to Luminar Core: a Business Unit with 5 or fewer resources and no paid modules returns to the free tier. There is no charge to remain on Core.

Luminar Works subscription FAQs
Is Luminar Core really free?
Yes. Luminar Core is free for up to 5 resources in your first Business Unit, with no time limit. It is not a trial.
What counts as a resource?
It depends on the Business Type of your Business Unit. In a Time-Constrained Business Unit, Agents count towards your resource licenses. In a Capacity-Constrained Business Unit, Assets count towards your resource licenses.
Where can I see pricing?
Current pricing is shown on the Subscription Management page, accessed from the main menu after login.
Why did my subscription change when I added a module?
A paid module is charged per resource across all resources in your Business Unit. When you activate a module, you pay the module price on every resource, and the separate per-resource charge for resources beyond the free 5 (which applies on Luminar Core alone) no longer applies. For example, a Business Unit with 8 resources that activates Smart Planning pays 8 × the Smart Planning per-resource price.
What happens when my free trial ends?
Your first payment is taken when the trial ends. If you choose not to subscribe, paid module capabilities are switched off and your account continues on Luminar Core. Your data is retained.
Can I remove a module and add it back later?
Yes. Removing a module switches off its capabilities, but your data and settings are retained, and your configuration is restored if you resubscribe.
Do I lose my data if I downgrade to Core?
No. Downgrading switches off paid module capabilities but your data is retained.
Can I switch between monthly and annual billing?
Yes. The change takes effect at the beginning of your next billing cycle.
How do I downgrade?
Remove paid modules and/or reduce the number of resources on the Subscription Management page. A Business Unit with 5 or fewer resources and no paid modules returns to the free Luminar Core tier at no charge.
How do I close my account?
If you want to leave entirely, full account deletion is possible. This will remove all of your data and settings, and deactivate all user profiles associated with the account.
